KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland baseball did throw in some good innings in its doubleheader against Sinclair Community College but the Lakers dropped both games by the scores of 6-1 and 13-4 Sunday afternoon.
With the losses, Lakeland's overall record falls to 8-18 and drops to 3-9 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Sinclair 6 – Lakeland 1
Sinclair jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first five and a half innings and Lakeland was unable to recover in a 6-1 loss to open the doubleheader.
Sinclair earned its 6-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and sixth and then scored three runs in the fourth. Lakeland did get on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Shepherd hit a one-out single and then was brought in by a double by Detering to get within 6-1. Unfortunately, that would be the final run scored for both teams in the Lakeland loss.
Sinclair 13 – Lakeland 4
Lakeland received a lot more run support in the second game but Sinclair again got out to a fast start and secured the sweep with a 13-4 victory to close the doubleheader.
Sinclair scored three runs in the opening inning to take a 3-0 lead but Lakeland fought back in the second. Oliver started the inning with a walk and then later scored on an RBI single from France for the first run. Mora pushed in a run with a RBI ground out to get Lakeland within 3-2. Sinclair added a pair of runs in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
The Lakers cut into the lead in the bottom of the third as Detering belted a two-out double and then came in to score on a line drive single by Oliver to get within 5-3. Sinclair added two more runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 7-3.
Lakeland again fought back, this time in the bottom of the fourth as France was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and then Mora later drove him in with an RBI ground out to get within 7-4. Sinclair did add six unanswered runs to cruise to the nine-run victory.
Lakeland will host a non-conference doubleheader against Garrett College on Tuesday, April 24 beginning at 2 p.m.
