PIQUA, Ohio – Lakeland baseball picked up two solid starts on the mound from Hudson Widrig and Anthony Ward to sweep a doubleheader at Edison State Community College by the scores of 5-3 and 13-0 Saturday afternoon.
With the pair of victories, Lakeland's overall record improves to 11-23 and 5-13 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Lakeland 5 – Edison State 3
Hudson Widrig picked up early run support and started out the game by pitching six scoreless innings to helped the Lakers earn a 5-3 victory over Edison State.
Widrig pitched all seven innings and allowed just three earned runs in the final inning to pick up the win while striking out four runs.
Lakeland got off to a fast start in the opening inning as Detering brought in two with a single and then DiDonato added an RBI single to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.
Lakeland scored a pair of runs in the fourth that made the difference in the game. Mora and Shepherd each hit RBI singles in the inning to build up a 5-0 lead. Edison State added three runs in the seventh to get within 5-3 after the final out.
Lakeland 13 – Edison State 0
Lakeland had a better offensive performance coupled with a one-hit outing by Anthony Ward on the mound to give the Lakers a 13-0 victory to complete the sweep of the doubleheader over Edison State.
Ward only gave up one hit in seven innings while striking out three in the shutout victory.
Alex Newsome hit a single, double and a home run while bringing in four runs in the win. Garrett Oliver hit a pair of singles and added two RBIs. Luis Padron, Shepherd and Kyle Espineli each had an RBI in the win.
Lakeland got going in the second inning as Detering triple to begin the inning and then scored the first run. Oliver, Alec Guy and Padron singled and scored in the inning while Newsome doubled and scored and Seth France walked and scored as the Lakers built a 6-0 lead.
The momentum continued in the third inning as Detering singled and then scored on an error for the seventh run. Newsome later added a two-run home run for a 9-0 lead.
Padron got the scoring going for Lakeland in the fourth with a double and a run scored while Austin Mora singed and later scored for an 11-0 lead.
Lakeland added a couple more runs in the seventh inning as Guy and Mora both singled and scored for a 13-0 lead.
Lakeland will finish out the regular season with a doubleheader against Edison State on Sunday, May 6 beginning at noon.
