The Lakeland Men’s soccer team played host in the Lakeland Soccer Invitational to kick off their season. The Lakers carried the play throughout the weekend as they posted a pair of shut-outs. The Lakers first game was against the Saints from Mercyhurst NE. Lakeland came away with a 2-0 victory. The Lakers controlled much of the game as they possessed the ball for most of the match. The Lakers outshot their opponents 8-3 and held the edge in corners 9-2. Jacob Granato and Jack McNeil combined for the shut-out while Jayden Boateng and Souleymane Seck both scored their first collegiate goals. In the other bracket, Walsh JV beat Lorain County CC 6-2 to earn the right to face the Lakers.
The Sunday match provided more of the same as the Lakers cruised to a 4-0 victory over Walsh. Lakeland was paced by two goals from Tom Worm, a goal from Kyle Brooks, and then a final marker from Seck. The Lakers outshot Walsh 8-3 and Jack McNeil earned the complete game shut-out. Lakeland also carried a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. In the consolation bracket, Mercyhurst NE beat Lorain 7-3.
This weekend, the Lakers travel to Indiana to play Ancilla College on Saturday before heading to Jackson, MI to take on the Jets from Jackson CC. On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Lakers travel to Cuyahoga CC to face the league rival Triceratops at 4 p.m.
