Lakers softball opens with a split

The Lakeland softball team opened their season today by traveling to Notre Dame College to take on the Falcons JV squad. The games were moved up one day due to the impending forecast. In the opener, the Lakers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first keyed by a Teyah Sautter home run. Unfortunately, from there it was all downhill for the Lakers and they dropped the game 9-2. Mia Minillo picked up the loss for the Lakers in pitching 5.2 innings.  Her lines are deceptive though as she allowed 9 runs - but only 3 were earned. Tristin Handy collected 2 hits for Lakeland.

In the nightcap, the Lakers bounced back and won 9-5. On the mound, Glendy Bergdorf picked up the win pitching 6.1 innings allowing 5 runs (3 earned). Teyah Sautter came on in the bottom of the 7th and was able to close it out. In this game, Lakeland had 6 players collect multiple hits.  Handy picked up 3 more hits including 2 doubles and 2 RBI's. Bailee Thorn and Angelina Lopez also collected 3 hits each and an RBI. Asianna Settles went 2-5 with a triple and 3 RBI's while Minillo collected 2 hits including a double and RBI. Ely Miller also picked up 2 hits and an RBI.

Morganti Mentions:  Game 1 - "We jumped out early but just couldn't plate any more runs. We had multiple chances with runners in scoring position and less than two outs. We gave them extra outs which led to 6 unearned runs. We have to clean that up."

Game 2 - "We played with more energy in the second game. Glendy gave us 6 strong innings and we gave her some runs to work with. We tweaked the batting order and it seemes to help. We hit the ball hard.'

Next up: The Lakers will travel to Walsh University on Thursday (3/12). The DH is scheduled for 3:30 pm. On Saturday (3/14), Lakeland is scheduled to play at Kent State Tuscarawas in a 1pm DH.
