Lakers Defeat Jayhawks to Open Season

KIRTLAND, Ohio - The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team opened their 2016-2017 season with a 69-53 victory over Jamestown Community College.

The Jayhawks came out of the gates quick as they took an early 5-2 advantage over the Lakers.  Lakeland quickly responded to tie the game at seven points apiece when Tiffany Rouse (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield) hit a three for the Lakers. The Rouse three ball sparked an 11-1 run for Lakeland, and propelled them to a 15-8 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jamestown ended the quarter on an 11-1 run of their own to take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.

The Lakers quickly regained the lead as they scored the first four points of the second quarter. The second quarter was a hard fought battle in which neither team was able to string together any big runs.  The game was tied or the lead changed hands six different times in the second quarter, but Lakeland enter the half with a 30-29 advantage.

At the half the Lakers were led by Brianna Prugel (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside), as she had six points, an assist, a rebound, and a steal. Patricia Cistrunk (Cleveland, Ohio / John F. Kennedy) also pitched in with six points in the half.

The Jayhawks scored the first basket of the third quarter, but then saw Lakeland open up a 40-31 advantage with a 10-0 run.  The run was highlighted by Cistrunk as she had a pair of layups and a three pointer, to scored seven of the 10 points during the run.  The Lakers continued their strong play throughout the third quarter and entered the fourth quarter with a commanding, 48-39 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter Lakeland crushed any chance of a comeback as their lead swelled to 14 points after Prugel hit a jumper.  The Lakers never looked back and went on to win the game, 69-53.

The Lakers were led by Cistrunk as she had a double-double, with 18 points and a game high 13 rebounds.  In addition to Cistrunk, Alicia Sephus (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) pitched in with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.  Makea Scott (Richmond Heights, Ohio / Richmond Heights) also poured in 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists.

Lakeland will be back in action Friday (Nov. 11) when they host Pitt-Titus in the TJ Memorial Classic with the game set to start at 5:30 p.m.
