Lakers Overcome Early Deficit to Defeat Panthers

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team was in action today as they were victorious over Pittsburgh-Titusville, 69-51 in the first round of the TJ Memorial Classic. With the win the Lakers improve to 2-0 on the season. 

The Panthers scored the first bucket of the game to take a three point lead and then quickly stretched their lead to 13-3 with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Lakeland halted the run when Makea Scott (Richmond Heights, Ohio / Richmond Heights) hit a jumper, which sparked an 8-0 run that saw the Lakers cut the lead to 13-11 with a minute remaining in the quarter.  The first quarter ended the Panthers ahead 15-11.

The second quarter opened as a struggle in which the teams traded baskets until the Lakers went on a 10-1 run that saw them capture the lead with a little more than a minute remaining in the half. The run was sparked by Brianna Prugel (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) as she scored five of the 10 points, to give the Lakers a 26-22 advantage.  Lakeland maintained their four point lead at the half as they entered the intermission ahead, 31-27.

At the half the Lakers were led by Patricia Cistrunk (Cleveland, Ohio / John F. Kennedy) as she had 10 points and 12 rebounds in the half.

Lakeland went on a 9-1 run early in the third quarter to see their lead swell to 44-32.  The run was led by Scott as she scored or assisted on five of the nine points.  The Lakers continued to play well for the remainder of the third quarter and entered the fourth quarter ahead by eight points, 48-40.

Lakeland put the game out of reach throughout the fourth quarter as they outscored the Panther 21-11 in the fourth.  Alicia Ward (Euclid, Ohio / Richmond Hieghts) lead the strong fourth quarter for the Lakers, as she scored eight points, on a perfect 4-4 shooting from the field.

The Lakers were led by a trio of stellar performances as three different players recorded a double-double.  Cistrunk led the way as she had a game high in points and rebounds with 18 and 16 respectively.  Ward also tallied a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Alicia Sephus (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) rounded out the trio, as she had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the game.

The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team will be back in action tomorrow (Nov. 12) as they play in the championship game of the TJ Memorial Classic against Rock Valley College, with the game set to begin at 2 p.m.
