Lakers Fall to Golden Eagles

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team was in action today in the championship game of the TJ Memorial basketball Classic as they were defeated by Rock Valley College, 67-42.

The Golden Eagles opened the game on a 4-0 run before the Lakers responded with a run of their own.  The Lakers rattled off a 6-0 run to take a 6-4 advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Makea Scott (Richmond Heights, Ohio / Richmond Heights) propelled the Lakers to the lead as she scored all six points on a pair of three pointers.  Rock Valley ended the first quarter on an 8-1 run and took a 12-7 lead into the second quarter.

The Golden Eagles rode their first half momentum to open the second quarter on a 5-0 run to stretch their lead to 17-7 with a little over six minutes remaining in the half.  Rock Valley held off every charge the Lakers tried to make and entered halftime with a 33-19 advantage.

 Brianna Prugel (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) and Scott led the Lakers at the intermission as they each had six points in the half. Prugel also added a pair of assists and a steal in the half.

The Golden Eagles continued their strong play in the third quarter but were unable to open up a wider margin.  The Lakers played tough defense in the third quarter as they had three steals and a block in the third quarter, but they entered the fourth quarter trailing, 51-34.

Rock Valley opened the fourth quarter on a 14-0 that sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.  The run was ended when Patricia Cistrunk (Cleveland, Ohio / John F. Kennedy) made a layup with just under two minutes remaining in the game. The Lakers fell, 67-42.

Prugel led the way for the Lakers as she had a team high in points and assists with 11 and three respectively.  Scott also pitched in with 10 points and two rebounds.  The Lakers defense was led by Alicia Ward (Euclid, Ohio / Richmond Hieghts) as she ripped down six rebounds and also tallied a game high four blocks.   

The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team will be back in action Thursday (Nov. 17) when they travel to take on Niagara Community College with the game set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
