Cougars Claw Past Lakers

KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Genesee Community College, 77-69.

The Lakers opened the game by making their first three shots. Alicia Sephus (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) made a pair of layups and Patricia Cistrunk (Willoughby, Ohio / Chardon) made the game 6-0 when she connected on a midrange jumper. The Cougars responded with an 8-0 run to take an 8-6 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter. The first quarter ended as a back and fourth battle as the teams traded baskets, and Genesee entered the second quarter ahead, 19-15.

After Alexis Hoxie (Euclid, Ohio / Euclid) scored the opening basking of the second quarter for the Lakers, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run and expanded their lead to 26-17.  Lakeland responded and outscored the Cougars for the remainder of the second quarter, but could not overcome the deficit. The Lakers entered the intermission behind, 38-36.

At the half, Lakeland was led by Sephus as she had 16 points, four rebounds and a steal.

The Cougars opened the third quarter on a 12-1 run that saw their lead swell to, 50-37 with just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Throughout the remainder of the quarter the Lakers battled back and cut the Genesee lead to single digits to enter the fourth quarter.

The Lakers opened the fourth quarter on a solid pace as they scored six of the first eight points of the quarter, to cut the lead to 59-51.  The quick start was a credit to Brianna Prugel (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) as she scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter.  The Cougars were able to hold off every run the Lakers made as the closest the Lakers came was within three points late in the fourth quarter.  Genesee was able to hold off the Lakers, and won 77-69.     

The Lakers were led by Cistrunk as she recorded her third double-double on the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Sephus also pitched in with 19 points, and gave the Lakers much needed energy as she had a game high eight offensive rebounds.

Lakeland will return to the hardwood tomorrow (Nov. 20) when they travel to take on Jamestown Community College at 12 p.m.
