KIRTLAND, Ohio – The Lakeland Community College women's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Jamestown Community College, 64-61.
After Jamestown opened the scoring with a pair of foul shots, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run that was driven by Alicia Sephus (Garfield Heights, Ohio / Garfield Heights) as she scored all seven of the points during the run. After a three pointer from Jamestown halted the run, Lakeland responded with another 6-0 run, which was sparked by Makea Scott (Richmond Heights, Ohio / Richmond Heights) as she scored a basket and had an assist on a basket by Alicia Ward (Euclid, Ohio / Richmond Hieghts) during the run, which gave the Lakers a 13-5 lead. Jamestown clawed back and Lakeland entered the second quarter with a 17-13 advantage.
The Lakers started the second quarter behind the hot hand of Scott as she poured in the first five points of the quarter to give the Lakers a 22-13 edge. Later in the quarter Jamestown went on a 7-0 run and tied the game at 27 points apiece. The Lakers ended the quarter as they scored the final five points to take a 32-27 lead into the half.
At the intermission the Lakeland was led by Scott as she had 12 points and six rebounds in the half. Sephus also chipped in with nine points and five rebounds for the Lakers.
Jamestown opened the third quarter on a hot streak as they scored the first seven points of the quarter to take a 34-32 advantage. The remainder of the third quarter was a back and forth battle as the game was tied or the lead changed hands 13 different times. The Lakers entered the fourth quarter behind on the scoreboard, 49-47.
After Jamestown netted a pair of free throws the Lakers went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead. The run was sparked by a Brianna Prugel (Painesville, Ohio / Riverside) jumper. Lakeland held the lead until Jamestown scored with just over one minute remaining in the game to take a 60-59 advantage, and Jamestown held on to win, 64-61.
The Lakers were led by Sephus as she had a double-double, as she tallied a game high 18 rebounds, and 15 points. Scott added a team leading 18 points and eight rebounds.
Lakeland will be back in action Tuesday (Nov. 29) when they host Niagara Community College at 5:30 p.m.
