The Lady Lakers were at it again on Saturday as they played host to the Sinclair Tartans and came away with an 88-77 victory. The win extended the longest win streak in Lakland history to 23 games. The Lakers are now 24-1 overall and 11-0 in the OCCAC while the Tartans fell to 13-14 and 5-7. This victory was especially sweet as the Lady Lakers clinched at least a share of the OCCAC title. The two teams battled it out in the first half as the Sinclair Tartans shot 8-13 from the arc to take a 52-49 lead into the half. The Lakers then did what they have done all season. They came into the second half after making some key defensive adjustments and blitzed the Tartans in the 3rd quarter. The Lakers were able to force turnovers and defend shooters better. The result was a 20-4 quarter advantage which gave the Lakers complete control of the game and allow them to coast to the victory.
This game was a total team effort for the Lakers as they had 5 players score in double figures. Gianna Pegoraro led all scorers with 26 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. Armani Jackson scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds while Julie Hajdu had 15 points, 7 assists, and 3 blocked shots. Dior Morgan stepped in and had a career high 13 points and 7 rebounds and Makayla Cooper chipped in 10 points.
Gardy's Gab: "Our sophomores really stepped up on sophomore day. They played like it was their last game at Lakeland and they wanted to go out a winner. The team really worked hard to put us in this position. They worked hard and stuck together. It's good to see them rewarded with at least a share of the championship. I'm proud of them."
Next up: The Lady Lakers finish out their regular season next Saturday (2/29) when they travel to Edison State to play the Chargers. Earlier this season, the Lakers edged the Chargers in a tightly contested 63-59 contest. Edison State currently sits at 25-3 and 10-1 in the conference. Both teams are assured either the #1 or #2 seed in the postseason tournament. The game is scheduled for a 1 pm tip.
