The Lady Lakers soccer team traveled to Battle Creek, MI on Saturday to face the Kellogg Bruins. In a hard fought match, the Lakeland came up with their first conference win in Michigan and are now 3-0 (1-0) on the young season.
Erica Wayts posted her first shut out of the year as she and defenders Jalyn Bachelor, Molly Kunas, Autumn Carswell, and Brooke Resse to just 3 shots and 1 corner throughout the game. Lakeland managed 8 shots and 4 corners on the day. The lone goal of the day came in the 25th minute on a beautiful pass from Brooke Resse as she stepped through the midfield and played a brilliant through ball to Kyley Molea. Molea finished it off by putting a well-placed shot past the Bruins keeper.
This is the women’s soccer teams second year at Lakeland. The team showed continuous improvement last season and this year are off to a good start. Coach Sivik commented, “Throughout a season there are turning points and learning opportunities. We have played well enough to win our games so far, but our next level will be realized when each of our players take a couple steps outside their comfort zones. I’m really proud of my players perseverance. Their will to win and understanding of teamwork is growing game by game.”
