The Lakeland volleyball team fell to Columbus State tonight in a 5 game thriller. This is the 5th time Lakeland has gone to 5 games this season; unfortunately they are 1-4 in such matches. With the loss, their record drops to 4-16 overall and 2-10 in conference play. The Cougars started strong in this match by taking game 1, 25-20. Lakeland kept working hard and took games 2 and 3, 25-19 and 25-19. During those two games in particular, they made spectacular digs, had very good passing, and were able to put points on the board with strong kills. They resembled the team that they have shown glimpses of many times throughout this season – excellent! However, during game 4 they had a bit of a let down. After going back and forth early on, Columbus State went on a bit of a roll to go up by 4 points. Lakeland continued to battle and pulled back within 2 before the Cougars finished it out – eventually winning 25-18. In the 5th game, Columbus started off strong and took a 8-4 lead at the switch. From there they traded points until it was 13-8. The Cougars finished it out with a 15-8 win.
Miozzi Mentions: "The team continues to play hard; we just have not been able to maintain the consistency with our play. We have stretches where we play outstanding and then we drop off and it has caught us in terms of wins and losses. I like our team, the effort and attitude have been very good, we have just struggled to get over that hump. All of our players had points in time where they made great plays and communicated well. Derria Grant really started to come into her own tonight and was pretty aggressive at the net. Two home games this week – so we'll get back at it."
Next up: The Lakers play host to Hocking College this Friday at 6 pm. On Saturday, they play host to Sinclair CC at 11 am. Admission to all games is free.
