The Lakeland volleyball team lost a gutsy match to Sinclair Community College today, 3-1. After playing so consistently on Friday, the Lakers came out flat for the first set and were dispatched of rather quickly 25-12. Lakeland regrouped though and battled hard in the second set. Lakeland jumped to a 4-2 lead and from there the two teams essentially traded points until the score was knotted at 19. Char Bournes and Asia Settles hit many big shots in this match to keep it close. The teams continued to battle and it was tied at 21. Sinclair came up with some tough floating serves and then put Lakeland away with a final of 25-22. Undeterred, Lakeland came out with effort again in the third set. The two teams again went back and forth as Lakeland held a 9-7 advantage before Sinclair went on a minnie roll to go up 15-13. Behind Bourne, Settles, Jessie Ceboll and Brook Burrington the team continued to fight and were able to tie it at 18. The teams then traded points and it was even at 21. From there, Burrington served the set out for Lakeland and they claimed the 25-21 victory. Set four would continue to be a seesaw affair. Again the two teams were close early and were tied at 6. Sinclair started to put together a little run relying on the floating serve again. Sinclair led 14-11 when Coach Miozzi called a time out to settle the team. Lakeland started to come back and cut the score to 17-15 forcing Coach Gan from Sinclair to call a timeout. From there, Sinclair closed out the match winning the set 25-17. With the loss, Lakeland falls to 5-17 and 3-11.
Miozzi Mentions: "We did not come out ready to play in the first set; however, the team really played hard and battled the rest of the way. Sinclair is a solid team and we were right with them in the last three sets (and taking one). I was proud that our players continued to give good effort – stayed positive – and did not back down. I'm proud of their overall effort today."
