Baseball earns split

The Lakeland baseball team played the Henry Ford Hawks in game 1 of their doubleheader today. Coming off a delayed start and so a very late finish last night (actually this morning), the Lakers had to turn things around quickly. James LaVigne wasted little time as he blasted a first inning home run to give the Lakers a quick 1-0 lead. The Hawks immediately responded in the home half as they took advantage of 2 walks to score 3 runs and take a 3-1 lead.  That score would remain until the top of the 5th innning when Tony Hall ripped a solo homer to make the score 3-2. Again the Hawks answered by scoring 3 runs in the home half to make the score 6-2. The Lakers did not quit. In the top of the 7th inning, Hall started things with a walk. Ryan Thomson followed with a single before Adrian Cuadrado was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Jacob Trevena was then hit by a pitch to make the score 6-3  - with the bases loaded and still just one out. Unfortunately for the Lakers, that's as close as they would get as the Hawks took a 6-3 decision.

Tony Hall and James LaVigne both homered while Jacob Trevena had a hit and RBI. Adrian Cuadrado and Emmanuel Dominguez also added a hit in the Laker loss. Dash Innes started and took the loss on the mound as he threw 5 innings allowing 6 earned runs on 6 hits. Landon Workman relieved and pitched a scoreless inning.

In game 2, the Lakers faced off against the St. Clair County Skippers. This time, the Lakers were able to battle all the way back and earn a 12-10 victory over the Skippers. Jacob Trevena started the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning when he hit a 1-out triple. Thomas Vokic and Emmanuel Dominguez then walked to load the bases. With 2 outs, Tony Hall worked a walk to score the Lakers first run of the day. Lakeland added 2 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning. Parker LaGreca was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Josiah Cuesta would then reach on a Skipper error and then steal second base  to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Jacob Trevena then followed with a 2-RBI double to put the Lakers up 3-0. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Skippers strung some hits together to take a 5-3 lead. Lakeland answered back in the top of the 4th inning. Will Mijares started things with a leadoff single. Tony Hall then doubled before James LaVigne walked to load the bases. Mijares would then score on a fielders choice from Parker LaGreca. Adrian Cuadrado then hit an RBI-single to knot the score at 5. In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Skippers scored two runs to go up 7-5.

Again, Lakeland answered. In the top of the 6th inning the Lakers plated 6 runs to take an 11-7 lead. James LaVigne started the inning with a single. Parker LaGreca walked before Adrian Cuadrado sacrificed them both up a base. Lakeland would then take advantage of 2 walks and a couple Skipper errors to score the 6 runs. Travena, Dominguez, Hall, and LaVigne were all credited with an RBI. The Skippers took adantage of 2 walks and an error to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to make the score 11-10. Lakeland tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning. Adrian Cuadrado hit a lead off double to get the inning started. Cuadrado would later score on a fielder's choice from Emmanuel Dominguez. Landon Workman was still pitching in relief in the bottom of the 7th inning. Workman allowed a 1-out walk and then a single to the Skippers. The next batter hit a fielders choice and then later stole second base to put the runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. Workman then stiffened and induced a fly out to rightfielder Sam Tetley to end the game.

Jacob Trevena led the Lakers offensively (2B, 3B, 3 RBI's). Adrian Cuadrado collected 2 hits (2B) and an RBI while Tony Hall added a double and 2 RBI's. James LaVigne had a hit and RBI while Emmanuel Dominguez added 2 RBI's. Will Mijares added a hit in the win. Casen Smith started on the mound and allowed 5 runs (2 earned) in 4 innings. Cameron Huang-Ince relieved and allowed 2 earned runs in .1 innings. Landon Workman relieved and picked up the win allowing 3 runs (0 earned) in 2.2 innings.
