The Lakeland softball team played host to the Edison State Chargers today in OCCAC action and dropped both ends of the doubleheader by the scores of 11-1 and 16-1. In both games, the scores were not indicitive of the way the games played out, but in the end, the Lakers were unable to overcome the Chargers. In game 1, the Chargers took advantage of a couple of walks and a bloop single to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. The score would stay 3-0 until the top of the 5th inning when the Chargers strung a couple of hits together to take a 6-0 lead. The Lakers would get on he board in the bottom of the 6th inning when Leah Richter hit a leadoff double. Lauryn Hawkins would hit an infield single as Richter advanced to 3rd base. Carmen Alvarez followed with a sac fly to center scoring Richter. Unfortunately for the Lakers, that's all they would score as they fell in game 1.
Lakeland mustered 4 hits in game 1. Leah Richter doubled and scored a run while Lauryn Hawkins, Abby Haydu, and Morgan Gross each picked up hits. Abby Schneider took the loss as she pitched a complete for the Lakers.
In game 2, the Chargers scored 11 runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach quickly. Again, the Lakers aided the effort with a couple of walks and an error while the Chargers recorded a couple of bloop hits in the inning to take command of the game. The Lakers would score their loan run in the 4th inning when Carmen Alvarez led off with a single. Sydney Plotts then reached on an error while advancing Alvarez. Alvarez would later score on a fielders choice from Abby Haydu. Alvarez recorded the only hit in the game for Lakeland and Leah Richter took the complete game loss on the mound.
Next Up: On Friday (4/11), the Lakers are scheduled to play host to the Owens Express at Laker Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
