The Lakeland softball team traveled to Piqua, OH today to face conference for Edison State. The Lakers ran into a tough opponent as they dropped both ends of the doubleheader by the scores of 7-0 and 7-4. In game 1, the game was scoreless until the 4th inning when the Chargers broke through with 5 runs. The Chargers were able to string some hits together as well as take advantage of a couple Laker errors to gain that advantage. Unfortunately, Lakeland was never able to put hits together as they dropped game 1. The Lakers managed just 3 hits in the game - a single from Lauryn Hawkins, Leah Richter, and Karli Cunningham. Abby Schneider took the hard-luck loss on the mound pitching a complete game and allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits.

In game 2, the Chargers held a 1-0 lead before expanding it to 7-0 after 6 innings. The Lakers had a few opportunities to get on the board throughout the game and finally came through in the top of the 7th inning. Natalie Phillips started the rally with a leadoff double. Abby Schneider followed with an RBI-single. Leah Richter then hit a single allowing Schneider to advance to 3rd base. Karli Cunningham followed with a sac fly to score Schneider. Carmen Alvarez later scored Richter on an RBI-single. Sydney Plotts followed with a single and then Emalee Harala then hit an RBI-single as both Plotts and Harala advanced on the throw. Unfortunately for the Lakers, that's as close as they would get as they dropped game 2.

Abby Schneider and Emalee Harala led Lakeland with 2 hits and an RBI while Carmen Alvarez and Karli Cunningham each added a hit and RBI. Natalie Phillips recorded 2 hits while Leah Richter had a hit and scored a run. Sydney Plotts also picked up a hit in the loss. Richter also took the loss on the mound going the distance while allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits. The Lakers left runners in scoring position in 4 of the 7 innings.

Next Up: On Friday (4/17), the Lakers will travel to Cuyahoga Community College to face the Triceratops in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
