The Lakeland softball team traveled to Kent State Tuscarawas today to face the Golden Eagles in non-league action. The Lakers would drop both ends of the doubleheader by the scores of 8-0 and 2-0. In game 1, the Golden Eagles scored 4 runs in the 1st inning as they took advantage of a couple Lakeland errors. Kent added 3 more runs in the 2nd inning as they jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead after 2 innings. The Lakers had a few opportunities to get back in the game, but were unable to come up with the key hit. Lakeland left runners in scoring position in 4 of the 6 innings.
Abby Schneider led the way with 2 hits for the Lakers. Lauryn Hawkins, Sydney Plotts, Natalie Phillips, and Karli Cunningham all added hits in the defeat. Leah Richter was tagged with the loss as she pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 8 runs (4 earned).
In game 2, both teams recorded 4 hits. The difference was that Kent State strung 3 of them together in the 2nd inning to score both of their runs while the Lakers hits were spread throughout the game. Unfortunately, Lakeland was unable to build around their hits as they dropped game 2. Natalie Phillips led the way offensively recording 2 hiits while Sydney Plotts and Abby Schneider picked up the other hits for the Lakers. Schneider also took the tough luck loss on the mound pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs while striking out 4 batters.
Next Up: The Laker swill travel to Danbury Lakeside HS tomorrow to face the Terra State Titans in OCCAC action. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
