The Lakeland women's basketball team traveled to Jamestown Community College tonight to face the Jayhawks in non-league action. The Lakers allowed the Jayhawks to jump out to an early 1st quarter lead before eventually falling 71-68 in a tight contest. In the first quarter, The Jayhawks shot a blistering 69% from the field and shot 9 more free throws in building an 8 point lead at 27-19. Lakeland started to turn the tide in the 2nd quarter as Kennedy Gadsen (13 points) and Monetta Hilory (5 points) paced the Lakers as they narrowed the gap to 46-40. The Lakers continued to battle in the 3rd quarter as 6 different players scored and the Lakers forced 4 turnovers to bring the Lakeland within 1 at 58-57. In the 4th quarter, the Lakers had their chances, but went cold from the field. In the 4th quarter, Lakeland shot 4-17 (23.5%) from the field and 0-6 beyond the arc. Defensively, Lakeland kept the pressure on the Jayhawks, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Kennedy Gadsen was the high scorer with with 27 points while Monetta Hilory finished her evening with 16 points. Joh'niqua Clay recorded 7 points while Arianna Vera finished with 6 points. Kanija Kimbrough added 4 points and a team high 8 rebounds while both Gabriella Moore and Kennedy Coleman chipped in 4 points in the Lakers loss.
Gardy's Gab: "We played hard, but struggled with their pressure early. I was pleased with how we continued to battle, but we need to have better offensive execution. We played hard and it was a good game - we just need to learn how to play for 40 minutes. We have a lot of potential and will continue to improve...we'll get back at it and come back ready for Saturday."
