The Lakeland women's basketball team traveled to CC of Allegheny County today to face the Wild Cats in non-league action. In a low-scoring back and forth affair, the Lakers came away with a hard-foght 43-40 victory. In the first half, the teams stayed close throughout and Lakeland went into the break leading 20-18. In the 3rd quarter, the Lakers shot just 4-12 from the line allowing the Wild Cats to tie the score at 33 after 3 periods. Both teams struggled to get into an offensive flow in the 4th quarter before Lakeland tightened their defense on the last couple of possessions to earn the victory.
In a balanced scoring attack, Joh'niqua Clay was the Lakers leading scorer with 11 points. Kanija Kimbrough had a strong game with 8 points and 12 rebounds while Kennedy Coleman finished with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Monetta Hilory recorded 6 points and 4 rebounds while Gabriella Moore added 5 pooints and 5 boards. Arianna Vera (3 points, 2 reboounds), Emerson Hren (2 points, 2 rebounds) and Raegan Perkins-Hirz (4 rebounds) all contributed solid efforts in the Lakers win.
Coach Gardy's Gab: "Close score throughout. Road games are difficult so close to the break - sometimes it's tough not to check out. We were able to come together and get some good defensive stops when it counted down the stretch. Good win to close out the fall slate."
Next Up: The Lakers will be off for the holiday break and then return to action against the Lorain County Commodores on Wednesday (1/7). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
